It all started when Sherry Arney moved to western Kansas from San Jose, California in 2001 to be near family who lived in Leoti. Sherry packed up everything, including their 3 dogs & 21 cats and made the trip in a caravan of three vehicles. She eventually located near the little town of Marienthal, which is about ten miles east of Leoti.
It wasn't long before Sherry began to notice a lot of animals in really serious need. It is sad to say, but in a rural environment, many people find it easy to toss out unwanted animals. Sherry soon added several animals to their already very busy household. After a time, Sherry began to believe that it would be a good idea to open an animal rescue and shelter so that she could formally adopt out the animals and receive donations to keep the shelter going. Several people in the area wanted to help and soon Silent Angels had a name, a board of directors, and 501(c)3 tax status.
In a short while, she found it necessary to re-locate because a lot of dogs can make a lot of noise and a more isolated location needed to be found. A helpful neighbor knew of a house on a small acreage northwest of Leoti which Sherry was able to purchase.
Silent Angels has a New No Kill Vision for the Great Plains, currently serving as a cat sancuary and small dog rescue.
